My daughter 6 year old has been suffering with eczema since she was a baby.

I have recently changed her soap, laundry detergent and lotion and it seems to have worked well.

I'm going more "natural" and avoiding PABA, SLS and Sulfates in any products that I use for her.

Products I'm using for her:
*For her laundry, I'm using Nature Clean detergent and NO fabric softner
*for soap I'm using Nature Clean hand soap
*for baths I'm using Live Clean body wash and Live Clean shampoo and conditioner
*for sunscreen I'm using Badger SPF 30

I'm using Galaxal Base Cream moisturizer after baths mixed 50% with liquid glycerin, while her skin is still wet from the bath.

Would love to find an alternative to the Galaxal Base lotion which lists Petrolatum as it's 2nd ingredient on the ingredient list...but it seems to work for her. Any suggestions for a natural cream with no Petroleum ingredients? Thanks!

Has anyone heard about Dr. Ricard Aron? He appeared on TV morning program to help an eczema sufferer out. I am thinking to try face to face consultation for my 2 year old son. Wonder how long his cream should be applied on. I don't really want to use cream containing steriod and antibiotics for a long period. Anyway..any comment would be really appreciated. Thanks. Best wishes to all of you here.

Hello all. I suffered from eczema as a child and then again in my 20s. My 'miracle cure' then was chinese medicine. It disappeared almost overnight. Even though I must add that taking the medicine also coincided with the end of a very stressful time in my life so that may have contributed a lot as well. Unfortunately chinese medicine is quite expensive, but if you can afford it it's definitely worth a try.

I am now in my 30s and it has come back but now seems to be hormonally linked. It flares up before my period and then before ovulation - particularly on my face and looks really red and blotchy. Does anyone have advice about anything I can do?

Hi, fellow suffers I am 23 year old male who has ezcema blemishes but my skin has improved by using a moisturiser called 'Gloves in a Bottle'. You can use it anywhere on your body or face. I only use it on my face and it really helps keep my skin hydrated. Also another product I found that works well is on skinactives.com , it is called Anti-inflammatory Cream and that has also helped my skin alot and has for many other people!!!

Hi to all of my Eczema sufferers,
Back in June I had posted about getting eczema after catching impetigo from taking care of my husband for 2 years without wearing gloves, however, the Derm never told us that it was catching and then I got it I had it for about 6 months and then it went in to eczema, I also have asthma, I now have it really bad on my arms and legs, fo a while I felt like I was walking around in a daze and not in full reality with was was going on in my life, I contribute that to using the steroids for about eight months and not even counting the body bloatedness, now about a month ago after battling terrible this condition and most of you know how bad it can get, while reading a post on Eczema Voice I found out that someone had used Sarna Eczema Lotion it has Hydrochloride in it, it has helped me so much I use it 3 times a day and also Acidopholis ( good bacteria)so betwen the two I am really starting to heal, I am so thankful to God for helping me to find this Link on Eczema Voice it has changed my life back to almost the way it used to be happy and calm.

I am healing so fast as long as I don't sratch myself and I know that it is very hard to do but in trying that to is helping me heal.

I would suggest and only thru my experience with this skin condition that everyone who reads this post should try Sarna Eczema Lotion I bought it at Wallgreens and it really works for me, takes the itching away almost in a second and dries and just feels great, before I put it on I take washcloth's and I soak them in cold water and wrap them around my affected areas and then I apply the lotion the greatest product and I would swear by it.

I hope this helps at least one person out there who is really suffering the way I was.

Take care all of you and maybe some day there will be a simple sure.

Laurie

Hi All,

Agree with Louise - Products can be as natural and chemical free as possible but that will not stop a reaction to some of the ingredients.A lot of people have had great success with Shea Butter but it brought me out like I had been on a sunbed for 2 weeks !!
Also as with most reactions it took at least a week before they start to appear.
Keep trying until you find something that works - only problem is when the manufacturers change the ingredients !!! Aaaaahhh Vaseline intensive care - Aveeno to name couple.....Rant over.

I'm afraid the allergenics creams were not a success in my case! I followed the advice, and initially they seemed to work ok, but after a few applications, my skin really started to itch badly. I have used the cream on my face, and this morning when i woke up, my face was really red and my eyes had swollen up like golf balls! I guess the problem with this "natural" cream is the sheer amount of ingredients it contains. They may all be natural, but that doesn't stop you being allergic to them. Shea butter, rose oil, aloe, liqorice...the list goes on and I could be allergic to any one of them. Trouble is, I don't know which one. I really wanted this cream to work, because I would love an alternative to steroids, and I'm genuinely happy for the people who have had success with it...just not me.

Hello miracle! Took your advice and went out this morning to the chemist and bought the intensive care ointment and emollient cream. They didn't react on my skin-good start! So I'll keep everyone posted on how I get on after a few days. I hope I can find an alternative to steroids because the skin on my face is starting to get thin from over use. My skin is so reactive it even comes up in hives on a windy day! Thanx!!

I have read through all the posts here and realised that I have tried most if not all of them. I have had eczema for 15 years and have had multiple courses of antibiotics and even oral steroids in the last few months. I have been for a patch test and found out I am very allergic to formaldehyde and parabens.

People who suffer from eczema are often allergic to a preservative or active ingredient in the creams/ointments they are using to moisturise, in their cosmetics or face/body washes, and in the topical steroids or steroid/antibiotic combinations they are applying in order to treat the eczema itself. This makes the eczema worse, hence the scratching, the stress - and finally oral antibiotics or oral steroids.

Here is my recommendation - and you should find relief within a couple of days. Stop using topical steroids if they're not working. Buy the entire Allergenics range - enter it into Google - and don't let anything else touch your skin. The Allergenics products are completely natural and have natural plant steroids in them.

Get completely organic makeup and stop using the stuff you have A great ointment to use which improved my skin within a couple of days is Calendula/Hypericum ointment
Wash all your clothes in SurCare, which is available in large supermarkets and definitely Tesco.

I wanted to post this because so many people out there are looking for help with eczema, which can be very debilitating and cause so much stress and anxiety.

Good luck!

Hello,
I've recently experience bad excema. I'm 28 and I've never had it before, but a couple months ago, it just started to show up on my face and neck and has progressively got worse. I'm a bit of a health/organic/all natural freak, so I've been on the hunt for a natural excema treatment product. I've found that tea tree oil helps well for redness, irritation, dryness and sooths the skin. People with sensitive skin should dilute it and consider doing a test patch before applying it all over. I use a combination tea tree oil ointment treatment named "Tea Tree Therapy". It stays on the skin better since it's an ointment and not in oil form. I bought it at Whole Foods for about $10.00. It looks like this 2 oz. jar will last me about 1 month and it apply it several times daily. It is oily and has a odor to it(which isn't too bad), but it works for redness and it works quick. If you keep the dry patches covered in this liberally, it will help a lot. Some people start to flake a day or two after using it. This is normal and will disappear. Thus far, I've tried at least a dozen other lotions and creams and none have worked as good as this tea tree oil.

You can get it online at:
goddess-within.com/637792700506.html

The tea tree oil seems to treat it well, but it does not seem to "cure" or prevent it. At least not for me.

Coconut oil is supposed to work well too, but it's very runny and is hard to keep on the skin.

I've also just ordered the Champori Excema Cream and Spray. It's on its way to my house and I'm anxious to try it. I've read nothing but great things about this product and it's all natural. I'll post another comment with my results.
Hope this can bring some relief to my fellow excema sufferers.

Hi Ive have been using Aveeno cream and bath oil for 2 days on my face. It hasnt caused any irritation but I find the substance sort of sticks to your skin. it isnt greasy but leaves skin a little sticky. It doesnt irritate in any way but lookin at it in the mirror it seems to make the layer of skin look slightly thicker.

Has anyone else experienced this and is it normal at the beginning, basically wat im asking does it tend to improve and feel/look better after say a month or so.

If anyone has any advice I wud be very very grateful as im unsure whether to go back to my old formula of oilatum or to perservere with Aveeno.

Thank you for reading this post and good luck with whichever course of treatment you are trying.

I have eczema in my ears, it is very painful and I am looking for relief. I was looking into Free derm HC until I read your board. I am allergic to any type cortisone (too much during my childhood I guess) and lanolin or any synthetic lanolin. The best relief thus far is a generic brand cream from Rite Aid drugs called Maximum Strength Antibiotic Cream Plus do not use the Neosporin brand as the cream is different. The antibiotic cream relieves the infections from night time scratching and the plus relieves the pain and itching. Still need something better, but it is the best so far. I have been to doctors and since I can't use any steriods they don't know what to offer.

I notice quite a few people discussing cardiospermum based products. I have been using products from the Dermex Skincare range for a while now. They have four cardiospermum products, a gel, a spray, a shampoo and a cream. I am getting good results with these.

Cardiospermum does have a slightly odd smell - but it not too offputting and as far as I am concerned - if it stops the itch , I don't care.

The gel is very cooling and stops the itching almost immediately. Worth a go ! They are based in Scotland UK and can be found at dermex.co.uk

I would plead with users on this forum that they should be very careful with a cream called "Free derm" and read ALL information given by people who have used the cream. My son is 6 years old and has had Eczema all his life. I came across the Free derm website by accident and purchased the "wonder" cream last week.
His skin went from good (for a Eczema sufferer) to extremely bad with red marks and lumps & bumps all over it. It has taken 3 days for the marks to go. He also started to cry in pain when we applied the cream! We washed the cream off straightaway and tried to get a refund that night. The person who I emailed informed me the policy for refunds is for orders below $95. Our order was $95.80!
There is small print right at the bottom of the website which informs you about the returns policy. It is VERY unclear about the returns policy on the main home page - you do not think there is a limit.

It read:

"100% Money back guarantee" &
"But if it doesn't help your problem for some reason, or if you're not 100% happy with it in every way, just return the unused portion and we will refund every cent you paid for it. Fair enough?"

Nothing about a $95 limit.

Also please read these links about the company PRIOR to ordering: I'll let YOU make your own mind up if you still want to go ahead and purchase from this company.

After trying countless topicals, I have found something I swear by if you have atopic dermatitis/eczema with the dry thickened skin ANYWHERE on your body and at ANY age, even children. It is called Triceram and they sell it on dermadoctor.com and skinstore.com. It is inexpensive, non steroidal (I am pregnant and it is safe to use). It does not curb the itching.etc but it heals your skin. It takes about a week of consistant use to notice the difference. I use Neosporin with pain relief still after a 5 min tepid soak (I have it on the soles of my feet) and at night and once after showering in the day I put on the Triceram. Look up the reviews...it has nothing but words of praise. Good luck!

I use aloe vera gel and it is very soothing. It's really good for sunburn/minor burns too. I must admit though, I don't find it particularly moisturising, it kinda leaves my skin a bit sticky, but I've found it helpful for the eczema on my shins. I put it on before going to bed and it seems to stop me scratching them during the night. However if my skin is broken or really inflamed I don't find it helps enough.

I have also found a homeopathic cream containing aloe vera and lots of other ingredients, which does seem to help me when my eczema is fairly bad. It isn't a wonder cure, but it helps me, and its called Hope's Relief Cream and is made in Australia. I order mine from www.hopes.com.au - it is quite expensive (about £13ish for 60g tub inc postage)

Another similar thing I've tried is called medihoney and is apparently available from Boots and other pharmacies. I have a trial tube and it seems to help calm sore bits. Apparently in Australia they are using honey like this to treat MRSA so that sounds pretty interesting.

Anyway, sorry to go on for so long - good luck with finding something to suit your little girl - I've always had eczema (am 22 now) and am still waiting for that elusive miracle cream, but there are definitely things out there that give me some relief, so don't give up! :)

My 14 month old is a fully paid up member of the atopic club! She started with eczema at 6 weeks which is currently controlled using various strength steriod creams and emollients. Like any mother I'm concerned about the long-term implications of using steriods so I'm really hoping someone's had a positive experience with the aloe vera creams or drinks that they'd like to share.

Thanks, in advance, for good news please!!!!!!

I noticed that you talked about healing a skin condition with alternative remedies. I wonder if you could give me some tips. I have contact dermatitis on the palms of my hands only. I was diagnosed through skin patch testing years ago that revealed that I am allergic to things like fragrances, dust, parabens, formaldehyde, nickel.
It's really difficult avoiding these things because they are everywhere. I've spent lots of time, money and avoidance for long enough now and am looking for a "cure" there must be something going on the inside of your body to make these allergies come about. Please do you know of any "magic potion"

thanks jane - i'll have a look into that - is good to try all these different approaches and even better when they work!!!. i know exactly what you mean when you talk about the sleep side of things- we lived on total sleep deprivation for the last 5 yrs and it just makes you feel so awful, sick & stressed - its like a godsend when you can get a few nights of decent sleep- makes you feel like you are human again.
that is one of the things that i think is common to all eczema in that it involves a huge expense not only of money but time, effort, & suffering. and of course its murphy's law that you will find something that works right at the end rather than at the beginning. but at least the positive is jane is that it is fantastic that at least you have something that is helping him - even though it may not be directly related to the eczema itself - it is helping him sleep (and probably relax)which then feeds back to allowing his skin time to recover and rest. so indirectly - it is probably helping his eczema. just goes to show how interconnected all the dimensions of our life are. i bet you feel a lot better and happier too. its great news.

Hi Ruth, To be honest when you watch them work on him you wouldn't think the were actually doing much. My husband and I have always had the normal osteopathy were the "crunch" you about. Cranial osteopathy is much more subtle. He has two people work on him at a time. One does his head (Skull) and the other works on points on his tummy and back. It looks like they just apply pressure and manipulate the points they are working on. No crunching of bones! They do a leaflet on it and have a childrens clinic once a week. If you go into Google its bound to have something on it. They even say that babies benefit from having it after difficult deliveries etc.

Its hard to explain it any further but hope it has helped. Like i say if you try Google or one of those engines it may be able to come up with technical bits for you.

Not sure if I've posted this in the right section or not. Sorry.....

Our son has been going to a cranial osteopath for the last five months. It hasn't really helped his eczema that much BUT... where it has helped is with his sleep.

Tom never use to go thru the night as anyone knows with a eczema child you end up in their bed trying to sooth them and calm them down as they itch so much. We had only had about two weeks worth of complete sleep in five years and 5days of that was when he was on oral steoirds.

Now I am actually spending all night in my bed. I am not saying it happens every night but it is one hell of an improvement. My husband gets quite a shock when he wakes up! It make hell of a difference to me just getting sleep and Tom.

We had previously had the Piriton and Vallergan Forte from the hospital but the Osteopathy has made a real difference.

We now go every 5 weeks it costs us £30 a session. Like i say its not made a real difference to the eczema but the sleep it has helped anymore than syrups from the doc's.

It didn't happen over night I will say but after about three treatments the sleeping started to kick in.

Hope it helps someone.

I stopped using the protopic after having used it for a month, she was seeming to get worse again. I had her off it for 2 weeks and she is almost entirely cleared up. I still have to discuss this with the dermatologist, but I think the protopic was making her worse. The free derm seems to have cleared things up in conjunction with not using the protopic.

hi angela - if you can't find the sorbolene around just perhaps check with your chemist as i'm sure it is available in Canada from doing a quick search on the internet. sorbolene cream is a very basic plain unperfumed cream which often is used to make more expensive cosmetic preparations - but it is very cheap to buy and it is non-allergenic. it is specifically indicated to be of use for dry skin conditions such as eczema. it can sting on broken irritated skin - (i think because it has an alcohol preservative in it)- but i find that this lessens or disappears if you mix it with some vaseline. i am finding that my girls eczema is again deteriorating badly and her skin is very sore at moment - but it doesn't seem to hurt as much doing it this way. i also sometimes keep an frozen ice pack handy when doing her creams which i try and stick on the really sore bits - seems to numb the pain somewhat too. i understand exactly how you feel - i often feel like the mother from hell - we have had to resort to low dose chemo to try and get hers under control - which we have now had to take her off of because it was pulling her immune system down too low. we are now feeling the return of this monster back into our lives again. i hate it, my husband hates it and my daughter hates it. being at such a young age too makes it very hard to explain to them or help them to understand what is happening. but WE WILLNOT BE BEATEN ON THIS - so just keep plugging along - take it one day at a time. let me know how you get on. take care

Free derm HC I got the Free Derm, and my daughter says it stings her, so we haven't used it much, although I had been using it on her feet and thought they were looking better with that than they are now with a different cream from the dermatologist. I get very itchy hands with eczema and it really helped me. I will try it again on her after a while. At the moment she is on protopic during the week and a cortisone on the weekend. What is sorbolene cream? I can't find it here, I'm in Canada.

As far as the emotional side of this, it is pretty tough to handle watching your child go through it and I feel like my daughter can't stand me because I am always reminding her to do her creams etc.

Wouldnt it be good if professionals took the psychological effects of eczema on children and their families more seriously. Our little girl hides and starts screaming when we need to put her creams on. When things are really bad she has been known to sing herself nursery rhymes while she cries and we put the cream on. But still no one takes our concerns about her emotional health seriously. Wanted to discuss this again with our dermatologist recently but his appointments had been treble- booked, so he was a bit too busy to help us very much. What do we need to do to flag up a very serious problem, its not just a physical issue. ???

Thanks for the ideas about the creams. I will give it a try and give some feedback. Right now she is actually on 7 days of oral prednisone and Betaderm cream from top to bottom to try to get this flare under control. We really wanted to avoid the prednisone she has been on it one other time, but the dermatologist says that for a short time like that that it is safe. I hope he is right. Anyway I think part of the reason it happened is that we let the routine slide while she has been doing so well. I was talking to my sister who is a child behavior psychologist, and works with kids who have chronic conditions and she said that the non compliance with routines and the fits and anger are very common, and to try giving some choices around when and where etc. that the cream gets put on. Because the fact that she has to use it needs to be a non negotiable thing, but to give her little choices around it. We have, I guess reinforced her behaviour by sometimes giving in and not doing the cream etc. I think sometimes we are in denial about her having it just wanting it to dissappear so much.
Anyway, I will post back on how the other cream choices work for her. I have drawers full of creams!

angela - i got so fed up looking for the miracle cream that would be the be all and end all of moisturisers. in the end i tried making my own from just using 3 basic ingredients that i easily bought from the supermarket- sorbolene cream, paraffin liquid and vaseline.

i had the same problems that you had - my girl hated the straight sorbolene (because if you put that on irritated skin it really stings like hell) and straight vaseline made her look like a deep fried otato chip. so i compromised - i tried this and i think it has worked well for us considering we go through bucketloads of the stuff.it doesnt' seem to sting her and whilst it is somewhat greasy to put on - it really keeps the skin soft. i tend to put it on liberally and then towel of excess.

here's my receipe -
Gently melt 1 part of plain vaseline ( i just use cheaper shop brand variety) with 1 part of paraffin oil in a saucepan over another saucepan containg boiling water i.e. double boiler. when this has all turned to liquid then just add your plain sorbolene cream (not lotion as too runny). Take off stove and then with a kitchen whisk or fork - whip it up all together and let it cool. You will get this glossy thick heavy based moisturiser which you can then put in containers and refrigerate until needed. i find it works well - but would be interested to hear what other people think. The whole thing takes about 5 mins to do and is SO EASY!!I've tried a few other bits and pieces like adding a bit of coconut oil (smells great) etc, can add a couple of drops of essential oils like lavender, calendula, chamomille etc - these are all meant to be really good for the skin and also make the cream more appealing. see what you think - anythings worth a try

You might want to try diprobase ointment. I use it after every shower and it keeps me nice and soft :)

If your daughter finds it too greasy, try a cream like dermol 500. that dries very quickly and is non-greasy so might be more suitable.

My mom just ordered some of the free derm for our daughter who has had moderate to severe eczema since she was nine months old, she is now 10. We thought she was outgrowing it, but last summer she got some bad patches and since Christmas has been almost totally covered. I will post about how it goes. She is so sick of creams that she sometimes literally has a fit about getting creamed up. They are either too goopy, or some of them sting, etc. What is a good moisturizer to use, we have tried galaxal base, vaseline, aquaphore, Georges cream, and she hates all of these. I have given her 2 sea salt baths and these seemed to help a bit.

Has anybody tried UV treatment? I am trying it now and after a nasty reaction to the first treatment it really started working. I missed a couple because of the flu which has appeared to have set me back but now I'm back on it and wondering if anyone else has tried it yet?

I have just started to use a new product I found it is a natural antseptic gel. It is fantastic it takes the itch away immediately and calms the rash so I am not breaking the skin. I have been looking for natural remedies that work for such along time as I am fed up with the conventional way with all the side affects. It is called Grandma Vines antiseptic gel and I bought it in a health shop in Leeds in Eastgate

Hi - has anyone tried a gel for eczema and psoriasis called Linotar? I think it may be called Exorex/Exarex in the U.S.A. It is produced in South AFrica and is also available in Australia and New Zealand.

I am looking for a non-steroidal treatment for my 6 month old. Any feedback welcome!

TIA, Sarah

HI
Has anyone tried "Medihoney"? I have found it reduced the weeping which leads to infection on my neck and seems to be clearing up the thicking skin. It seems to be making the lines and wrinkles disappear...

from the NES
Wau Wa Cream warning
Many people have been enquiring about this cream. For those who do not know about it, it is a cream from Ghana that claims to be made from petroleum jelly and the juice of the Wau Wa plant. We have been unable to find out what the Wau Wa plant is. It has been available in the UK for some time via certain health food shops and over the internet.
Some people have found the cream beneficial for the treatment of eczema. It has caused interest amongst dermatologists and the National Eczema Society because it appears to be so effective. However, according to tests carried out by the Medical Controls Agency (MCA) it contains clobetasol propionate. Clobetasol propionate is a very potent topical steroid, which is used for severe eczema. It should only be used in exceptional circumstances and with medical supervision.
If you are using Wau Wa cream, we advise you to stop. Use your prescribed topical steroid and your favourite emollient cream. You may find that you have a flare-up as you adjust from the Wau Wa cream to your regular topical steroid. If you are concerned, speak to your GP.
Those of you wishing to carry this forward in terms of a formal complaint against Wau Wa cream should write to:

Jane Robinson, Medical Controls
Agency,
Market Towers, 1 Nine Elms Lane, London SW8 5NQ

I'm using Elena's Collection Trinity wash - it is very good - I have had to stop using the creams because I have infected skin and am off to see the Derm tomorrow - where I will be refusing steroids again no doubt - The wash doesn't hurt my skin and is helping to dry up the bad bits and is great for washing my hair. But at the moment I am in so much pain like sunburn all the time, I could cry.

I am 34 and have the same problem as Hev, I am just trying 3 months of a 'natural' wash, oil and cream which have been tested and used for 14 years now. I'm not making any recommendations here but after 3 days my skin is healing and not itching so much. I have been staying awake until I know I can drop then taking Piriton to help me stop itching and sleep. Last night I slept without taking it for the first time in ages after using the cream. Today some of the sores which have just not healed for years are closing up a bit. I have been so despairing and embarassed for so long I have desperately bought anything that promised to help and wasted probably thousands on alternative treatments - massages, acupressure, healing, homeopathy etc - most things did nothing much except improve my spending. If you mail me I'll let you know what I'm trying as the lady provides samples before you buy but as I said no recommendations yet - I'm trying 3 months first
