One thing in common with Abido / Wau Wa cream users have is this: It clears up eczema quite quickly (typically 3 days). But in the same vein, it flares up worse than before, if the cream's useage is stopped. It appears one has to be "weaned" off the stuff, to avoid unpleasant side effects. My 4-month-old daughter has the rash on her face, though it's gradually fading, with the use of her GP-prescribed E45. I feel people are in too much of a hurry to allow prescribed creams to work, or the rash to clear naturally. Use it on your face? No! Use it on an infant? Heck, no!

My son is 18 months old and developed Eczema when he was about 6 months old.
I have tried several creams from the doctor and I have it myself mor so when I was a child but he's scratches him so much his skin tears and bleeds and he has had sleepless nights because of it, I was introduced to Adido through a Friend and I can say that it really works I don't use it all the time so his skin does get breaks from it as I understand it has sterioids in it, like most prescribes medicines from my GP. i would defiinatly recomend this to anyone regardless of the rumors the fact is the skin cream actually works, I would suggest not using it everyday eps once the exczema has calmed down i would alternate it between and ointment based cream.

With all creams there is going to be a side effect but to me it seems like this cream has to be sold on blackmarket because of high profiting companies not wanting to lose out on money.

I pay £8.50 for a tub and one tub usually last's me about 2 months depending on how bad his skin is.

Hi, my son suffers eczema, he's 9 months old. I started using abido cream a few days ago and noticed a dramatic improvement but after reading your comments, I am very concerned about further using this product. I have tried everything else prescribed by the doctors but to no avail. Can anyone suggest anything else that doesn't contain steroids that actually works?

He prescribed hydrocortisly skin cream (steroid) recomended for 12years plus but still it does not work and he warned me of side effects that come up due to long team use. But it burns him and crys when its been applied and due to this they send him home from the creche coz he is more demanding.A friend got be abido and it worked. I understand that it contain steroids but it makes life better for my son.He does not wake up at night crying and itching. Now he even socialises and he was ashmed to do so.What else can a mother do...i have tried it all..all the creams, seaweed bath, aloe vera gel

I have been using nothing but Wau wa for approx 9-10 years now and call it it my miracle cream. I had sufferred with facial eczema since I was 6 months old (i am now 33). However, of late my sister (who also uses Wau wa) and I notices a series of small small spots on our face, especially around our mouths. Apparently this condition is called periodermititis is caused by long term use of steroids. We have been told to discontinue use of this cream now. I have stopped for the past week, and my eczema has returned. Apparently it will take about 3 weeks for the skin to heal. I hope it does as my skin seems extremely thin.

steriod is steriod whether in high or low concentration it dosent matter d low conc will still do wat d high conc does.just bcos its 4rm Africa its been criticised.i personally went 2 GP and was given hydrocortisone 1%.ok that and wauwa or abido which has already been mixed with other ingredients which is more harmful, check well and u see its hydrocortisone which is like raw steriod.

Hi
My son who will be nine in the next couple of days has been using Wau Wau cream since he was 2+. I must say it was a relieve when a friend recommended the cream. My son could not wear shorts , his wrist and knee were always sore and bleading, the itching was unbearable. I only apply the cream to the affected areas at present there is no skin discolouration. I still do use his priscribed creams.

This is to all that use WAU WA cream...be very very careful.. if using it mix srtictly 1 teaspoon of it in vaseline and olive oil (only if the Eczema is severe, otherwise DO NOT use it, unless it breaks out). This is because its high in Hydroquinone, which is very harmful and the side effects are close to irreversable. Unfortunately Osas has been banned which was very good on eczema with the claim it has traces of steroids( but not all bottles were found with it)
Iam 21 and have suffered from eczema for a long time i used wauwa and it left me with dark patches around my eyes on my face, much as it cleared all the eczema i had. BUT i now have skin (patchy) pigmentation, more to that it is a bleaching cream as a result of the hydroquinone.....
Iam goin thru a terrible time as i now look like i have been bleaching my skin (left me with patches)and my skin is so terrible because i discontinued use.
My best advise is if you can find something else to cure the eczema pls do coz wauwa is on the black market and if banned out completely the eczema is going to escalate...Buy aloe vera gel from Holland & Barret mix it with Vaseline baby jelly in pink container with olive oil and ask the GP for some creams that do contain steroids as thes are used under supervision. You can mix these as well in the olive oil mixture!

BIG GOVERNMENT CONSPIRACY!

THE PROBLEM WITH WAU WA CREAN WAS THAT IT WAS SOLD AS A HERBAL CREAM WHEN IT CLEARLY WASN'T.

BUT TO GO THROUGH THE STRINGENT MEDICAL PROCEDURE OF SELLING IT, IT WOULD NEVER HAVE PASSED. BECAUSE OF THE GREAT INFLUENCE OF THE DRUG COMPANIES- WHO MAKE A BOMB ON THE HYDROCORTISONES ETC.

THE BRITISH MEDICAL JOURNAL PUBLISHED THE REPORT ABOUT WAU WA CREAM STATING THAT IT HAD DERMOVATE. THIS IS ONE OF THE HIGHER BAND OF STEROIDS.

I WANTED TO DO MY OWN RESEARCH BECAUSE WAU WA CREAM WAS HANDED INTO HOPE HOSPITAL SALFORD FOR A TEST AND THEY DIDNT EVEN PICK UP ON THE STERIOD IT CONTAINED.

THE BMJ CLAIMED THAT WAU WA CREAM HAD 0.012% DERMOVATE/CLOBETESONE. SO I RANG UP AND ASKED THE AUTHOR OF THE ORIGINAL PIECE ON WAU WA CREAM, WHICH ONES WAS STRONGER 0.5% HYDROCORTISONE OR 0.012% DERMOVATE.
HER REPLY WAS THAT 0.5% HYDROCORTISONE WAS STRONGER!

AFTER TRYING HOMEOPATHY FOR NEARLY 2 YRS AND CHINESE MEDICINE AND LIVER CLEANSE ETC., ALLERGY AND INTOLERANCE TEST, ETC., MY SON'E ECZEMA IS STILL CHRONIC AND I HAVE RESORTED BACK TO THE STERIODS FROM THE DOCTORS THAT I KNOW ARE STRONGER THAN THE WAU WA CREAM. THE ONLY THING THAT EVER WORKED WAS WAU WA CREAM.

I AM ASKING ANYONE OUT THERE IF THEY KNOW WHERE CAN I BUY THIS CREAM FROM OR THE ABIDO CREAM?

BECAUSE OF THE GVERNMENT CLAMP DOWN, OBVIOUSLY INFLUENCED BY THE DRUG INDUSTRY, THE SELLERS OF WAU WA CREAM HAVE GONE INTO HIDING!

YOUR ANSWER TO MY QUESTION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

A friend provided me with Wau Wa cream and alta soap and within 2 days my skin was clear! It works and must have steriods however I thank God I came across it when I did . I would advise anyone using it to wean themeselves of it slowly and use shea butter or oat butter to moisturise & control dryness and itching.
I wld like ingredients to be included onit's packaging thou

People... Cream 999 contains a steroid, which is why it works. The prescription you may have obtained from your dr also contains a steroid. Steroids are problematic in large amounts, but they are also one of the wonders of modern medicine when used properly. If you buy a drug over the internet and use it without proper medical supervision, from an MD or a respectable practitioner of TCM, that is unwise. Someone mentioned fiducin cream they had from their dr. Well that contains a steroid, an antibiotic and an anti fungal as well. Steroids are for short term use only. Cream 999 comes with a warning to use sparingly and for no more then 7 days.

My son is fit and health with a clear skin and that is what matters if you are in doubt about it do not use it. When a white man prescribes then it is good, when its a blackman's prescrption then it is questionable afterall it is not food that can distroy his internal organs neither has research shown it to be cancerious.

I am writing to warn you all of the effects of the abido cream. I used it for my first son when he had eczema as a baby and it worked wonders by clearing it up within a day or two but immediately i ran out of the cream the eczema would flare up even worse. I decided to stop using the cream. My son is 2years old now and the ecczema has gone naturally but he is now left with some scars on his elbows and knees which i believe was caused by the abido cream.

I have since given birth to my second son and he is 3months old and he has developed ezcema as well but just on his face but i have decided to let nature take its course and not revert to dodgy creams like abido. PLEASE STEER CLEAR OF THESE CREAMS!!!!!!!!!

My 7-month baby has suffered immensely with accute eczema and at 5 months he was prescribed oral steroids, Emovate cream (Stronger than 1% steroid) and wet bandages with a stronger concoction of steroid. Nothing worked but OSAS cleared his skin within 24 hours of use. Everyone is up in arms over a trace of steriod when we all know we will go back to using the pure concentrated stuff with little success - at least this is the case with me. He now eats whatever he likes and his skin looks great. I will now slowly wean him off the OSAS by diluting it with Vaseline Intesive Care lotion and will use the OSAS cream if he flares up again. No one can justify me leaving my son with scalding red and itchy skin when OSAS is able to help.

I started to use it on my newborn child, aged just 4-5 weeks old! Ezcema runs in my family and my daughter had it bad from her first few days of being born. She appeared fairer but I thought that it may just be her main colour emerging from being born. I am so scared about the long term effects that I may have inflicted upon my own daughter. Can someone please tell me what these effects are? I've heard about organ failure.

If it does contain potent steroids then using it for a year on a childs skin is a long time even if you are only using it once a week. The reason her skinis so clear is probably due to the strengh of the steroids. I would certainly not use it on my son but I do understand how parents could become desperate to see their little ones happy. I just worry about the long term effects though.

I disagree as if this cream has potent steroids in it then it especially should not be used on a childs skin. The other thing is when using potent steroids it is very hard to stop as the skin goes into rebound and often flares worse than it was before.

Hello Everyone

First of all reading all of these reviews is giving me the creeps believe it or not. However I just came across this site. Anyways I actually was introduced to Abido Cream just over 2 years ago and I have had alot of itchyness on my left leg. When I went to the shop I was given the Abido Cream as well as a soap. However there was no name given for the soap so therefore I can't tell you what it is.Regardless on my left leg I believe I only used it for about 3 weeks at maximum the itchyness went 100% and since I have no longer used it and the itchyness is still gone however the only remains is that it has left marks on my legs though I have not had anything meaning the itchyness returning. Consequently I have recommended this to 3 other people with exzema and have all cured from this and no this is no joke.

the manufactures do not label them with steriods because of they did, the products would not fly off the shelf. Unethical - yes, but do they care? no, they get their money and that is that. it's down to us (the community) to be vigilant and pass on info.

I think it will be very wise if the manufacturer can label all the ingredients clearly rather to state some plants found in ghana.

ABIDO is one of the creams to avoid...

taken from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency website

" Since 2002, the Agency has investigated 17 suspected cases of illegal inclusion of corticosteroids in reportedly herbal topical creams; of these seven were found to contain steroids.

The creams can be used for the treatment of skin conditions such as eczema. Corticosteroids are chemicals that control metabolism and sexual characteristics. They can cause skin thinning and, in the long-term, worsen conditions such as eczema and dermatitis which the creams can be used to treat.

The creams have been supplied as labelled finished over-the-counter products in TCM outlets, independent supermarkets, beauty shops, and by practitioners in unlabelled containers. Where the products were labelled, they were referred to as 'Abido Cream', 'AA Cream', 'Xiao Yan', 'Yibishu Ointment' and 'Wujigao cream'. Other products which have been found to contain corticosteroids were labelled as 'Wau Wa' cream and '999 cream'.

The Agency is aware of a number of other organisations which have also found topical creams, presented as being purely natural and herbal in nature, to contain steroids."

I was recommended this 'Abido cream' a couple of years ago and have always lived by it... i suddenly stopped using it last week as i had run out of the stuff and now my face has been extremely itchy and sand paper like which after reading all the stories on here has proved to be right... I would not recommend this cream now at all (wheras at first i loved the stuff). I just dont know what to do now as aqius cream, oilatum, e45 etc do not work for me and would rather not use hydrocortisone due to thinning of the skin...can anyone please help????

hello,

I work for Tonight with Trevor MacDonald and we are doing a programme looking a drugs and treatments sold over the internet.

I am very interested to speak to anyone who has tried a cream that they found on the internet that has worked or, like wau wa, may have turned out badly.

Please ring me for a chat on 0207 316 6484.

Many Thanks!

be very careful about wau wa cream it is far from herbal. I have just taken my 2 sons aged 3 and 11mths to the hospital with this cream to be told it contains the highest steriod cream that could be prescribed. it would never be given to children and can have side effects such as it can attack your internal steriods leading to organ failure. u can imagine my horror as i have been using it for 4 weeks. my children r now having to be weaned off it as stopping it straight away can lead to a massive flare up of eczema. ***please steer clear of it***

I have personally used this cream before...it was also known as "Abido cream" or "999 cream". A friend got it straight from China for me. But the irony is even the guy from China warned my friend about it. Initially it was very effective for me, but when i used it again, after a while, it no longer works any more. The side effect of thinning skin happens no matter wht steriods u use, but i highly recommend u dun use it...it has a very very high level of steriod

I am shaking with fright at the moment. My seven year old son has had excema from one extreme to another since he was four months old. At my wits end, and under the 'goodwill' of a neighbour I tried the Wau Wa cream. He had relatives that had used it and it got rid of their excema. I went on google to try and find the stockist so I did'nt have to bother him with buying a second tub for me and I have been freaked out at all the horror stories. I can't wait to bathe my son in some oats when I get home to remove any traces of bloody Wau Wa. I am DREADING the aftermath now since I have been using it on him for about two weeks now. I feel like a complete idiot to put my son through this! what should I do? I will not give him any more obviously.

a friend of mine recently gave me some cream for my daughter's eczema, the cream is called abido cream, within a matter of days her skin cleared, I stopped using it because I suspected it was the dreaded wau wa cream under a different name. Has anyone heard of it ? Can anyone throw some light on this ?

Hi jenny
I have had excema since birth and have flare ups usually during winter anyway i have been told i am allergic to eggs, soybeans, rubbish food i notice my skin will definetly pay the next day like burger rings and other crap food like that, it is apparently common for people with excema to be allergic to soy not like when i was younger i was told soybean was good for me since i cant have milk, My mother said that when dairy was cut out of my diet my skin was very good so that may be a try and Wheat is another one, My suggestion is to do an allergy test and also homeopathics are good too, I have flaxseed caps 3 a day and evening primrose oil and fish oil the omega is very good and also i have salmon i just buy tins of salmon. I am also taking a elixer called liverplex which i got from a healthfood shop but i would find out if that is alright to use for a child the reason i am taking the liverplex is i have read that sometimes people with excema the liver doesnt function as optiminally as others so i thought it was worth a try.

I have just been given the telephone number of someone who has used the cream and found that it was helpful she stated that her Dr tested it and found that it did not contain a steriod but from what you are all sayiong it contains a worse product. Everythying I have used on my daughter from steroids to emolliants from the GP has not worked and frankly I am looking for something anything else.

Let me warn you all about this cream, i am a long term suffer of atopic eczema so when it was suggested i try this so called 'Herbal Cream' i jumped at the chance. Although the cream worked very well it began to bleach my skin to a point where could see the viens in my hands. However, the real problem occured whwen i stopped usuing the cream, in all my years of having this skin disorder, i hve never experienced such a dramatic change in my skin condition to the point where can honestly say i was suicidely...............please don't touch it and those so brothers and sister who sell this cream should be locked up ....bastards !!

steriod creams are better used in large amounts until the skin shows signs of improvement. Once the skin improves use in smaller and smaller amounts until it is not needed. Damage to the skin happens when steriod creams are used in small amounts for a long period of time. Steriod creams (i'm contradicting some doctors here!) are best for SHORT TERM use ONLY - DON't let a doctor tell you otherwise (they'll tell you anything to get you out of the door anyway!!)

hi liz, i know the cream. Have used it my self, drastic improvements, but its a suppresent,it contains a steriod called clobetasol, content around 0.05%, which in its self is a small amount, but it is one of the most potent steriods available. My advice, use it very sparingly, and when you have to, if you can go without using it for a week or so then its ok (in my judgement that is), i'm not a doctor but have been told this by my dermatologist. I use it with a moisturiser like e45 or aqeous (spelling?) cream. Avoid using on the face. Hope this helps.

Hi Liz, read the following message. It was in a copy of Exchange, the NES magazine, regarding Wau Wau cream from the NES

Wau Wa Cream warning
Many people have been enquiring about this cream. For those who do not know about it, it is a cream from Ghana that claims to be made from petroleum jelly and the juice of the Wau Wa plant. We have been unable to find out what the Wau Wa plant is. It has been available in the UK for some time via certain health food shops and over the internet.
Some people have found the cream beneficial for the treatment of eczema. It has caused interest amongst dermatologists and the National Eczema Society because it appears to be so effective. However, according to tests carried out by the Medical Controls Agency (MCA) it contains clobetasol propionate. Clobetasol propionate is a very potent topical steroid, which is used for severe eczema. It should only be used in exceptional circumstances and with medical supervision.
If you are using Wau Wa cream, we advise you to stop. Use your prescribed topical steroid and your favourite emollient cream. You may find that you have a flare-up as you adjust from the Wau Wa cream to your regular topical steroid. If you are concerned, speak to your GP.
Those of you wishing to carry this forward in terms of a formal complaint against Wau Wa cream should write to:

Jane Robinson, Medical Controls
Agency,

As an adult sufferer I have recently been introduced this Nigerian remedy. It is derived from yams, I am told, and it comes in the form of soap and cream. I was given a small sample which I have used for two days and the improvement is noticeable already. However, I am reluctant to continue using the product until I find some further information about it's long term effects. Can anyone help?
