PREMANENT CURE
I cured myself with a thyroid medicine and an elimination diet.
I had severe eczema in my ear canals. I would scratch at it and get ear infections. I thought I would eventually become deaf. I was very afraid. So I researched all of it.
I had almost no ear wax. I also had dry skin, low morning body temp, intolerance of heat/cold, very slow hair & nail growth, and other signs of low thyroid. But my thyroid blood test results showed only a bit low, but still in the normal range.
To increase ear wax production and restore normal oily skin, I took a thyroid medicine Cynoplus, which is a T4/T3 combination. I now have some ear wax and oily (not dry)skin. Before all this, I was trying all kinds of natural soaps and shampoos, body lotions, etc as the solution. Now I can use any soap or shampoo and don't need skin lotion.
I also try to have more healthy oils in my diet -- olive oil, real butter, peanut butter, etc.
Also, to fully stop eczema flare-ups, I did an elimation diet of the most common food allergens (corn, wheat, tree nuts, coffee, alcohol, gluten, etc). I found that whenever I ate the smallest amount of corn (in any form, including high fructose corn syrup [found in MANY foods and drinks], corn starch, popcorn, etc) the eczema would start within 1-2 days. This happened even after I increased my ear wax by boosting my thyroid, but the eczema was very minor -- it didn't spread to the ear canal, just at the opening and went away quickly.
I have been free of ear eczema for three months now and also feel much better overall. The Cynoplus thyroid hormone T4/T3 also cured my chronic fatigue, brain fog, frequent depression, and slow wound healing.
Research/Google elimination diet and also the symptoms of low thyroid (hypothyroidism) -- and cure yourself permanently.
If you can't afford many doctor visits or expensive U.S. medicines, or you have a doctor who is unwilling to let you try thyroid hormones, you can try another doctor -- or order online inexpensive Cynoplus from a Mexican pharmacy and start at the lowest dose. You can also order U.S. blood tests via the Internet (without a local doctor), with blood taking labs in almost every U.S. city; the test results are emailed to you.
If you can afford it, it is best to see a doctor, ask for a hard copy of blood test results, and get a prescription for U.S. medicines. Remember that even if blood tests show normal levels of thyroid hormones, but you still have many of the low thyroid symptoms, you may need to insist that your doctor let you try thyroid hormone pills -- especially if you have serious problems like eczema in you ear canal and resulting, dangerous ear infections. See if T4/T3, or T4 alone, increases ear wax production. You will know in one week if it works.

I had this EXACT problem & went to several ear nose throat doctors who all told me to use hydrocortisone, which does NOTHING. I don't know if this will work for everyone, but I started taking biotin for a completely different reason and it cleared my ear problem up! Turns out, it was a vitamin deficiency causing the problem and biotin is a form of Vitamin B7. Now here's the interesting thing...I thought I was permanently cured after a year of not having it, so I stopped taking the biotin, approximately 6-7 months later, I had the ear eczema again. I purchased another brand of biotin and it DIDN'T WORK. I went back to the Natrol chewable brand from Walmart and it worked! I don't know what the difference is between the brands; just as long as I don't have to deal with the oozing, itchy, flaky ears, I'm happy! I hope this helps someone!

I have had this condition for about 4 years. I have only been to the doctors a couple of times for ear infections because of my constants scratching. I didn't appreciate how common it is and have just started to see if T tree and olive oil will help. It really does frustrate me with the cycle of clear fluid drying on the outside of my ear and then the itch from dry skin.

Good news !! I had this problem for about 4 years and now its gone. I fixed it ! After my Doc told me i would have it for life... ok so here is how i did it... Just a little background n this journey you are going to have sorting this out... the reason your ear gets itchy is because the ear wax is not it its normal state so your ear gets eczema. The wax stops the eczema by keeping the skin happy. You will notice if you use a q-tip with vinegar and then some honey it will stop the itchiness for a about 24hrs maybe more... now im not exactly sure how i cured it but here's basically what I did. I drank a Spriralina/banana drink maybe 1Liter every 5 days and some vegetable juice (lots of vitamins - basically eat really well). I used cider vinegar in my ears with a q-tip ( before going to sleep) don't dip to deep and damage your ear drum please! just use the q-tip to wipe the eczema area its stings ( way i look at it is your killing the infection). After you have vinegar-d it use the q-tip with runny honey, use the q-tip to coat the itchy bits with honey ( i think this kind of acts like ear wax ).

Now the idea is to get your ear to start to re-populate the ear with its own ear wax. This takes not itching the ear and not cleaning out the new wax your ear it making. If you do get the wax out of your ear with a q-tip or your finger cover the itchy area with this wax with your finger or the q-tip. The wax is your friend!

You will notice during this process your ear will produce wax but its watery this wax is not good just clean it out. (its a cycle, u itch it weeps, the wax gets saturated by the weeping and fails to do its job)

The wax is no good when its saturated with the weeping liquid that comes from the eczema cracks. You basically have to not itch your ear down deep. Eat super healthy use the vinegar to kill the infection and the honey after to sooth and simulate ear wax. And let the ear start to produce wax again (proper wax). Then next thing you know its stops itching and the ear returns to the ears you once had.

In the final stages of treatment i found myself just using antiseptic cream .

You don't clean the ear out with q-tip at all you just keep the area you can touch with your finger in the ear hole an antiseptic cream (Final stages of treatment).

Now just to let you know I did have otitis externa
first and my doc gave me some stuff that killed it. But after that, my ears were still itchy and he said you will have to treat it ( now eczema ) for the rest of your life. The next 4 years i treated it with natural remedies all the suggestions on this forum ( thanks sooo much everyone). So I would advise going to your doc to kill the otitis externa infection if you have this.

I hope this helps

I have this problem also.

One thing im curious about is weather all of you with this problem have a normal level of ear wax ?

In my case I used to have lots of ear wax in my ears, now I don't ( after treatment of ear drops for otitis externa )after this treatment basically don't have any earwax ( well the same earwax I was once used to ).

I think that normal wax level in the ear would protect the skin from eczema.

I have also noted the wax in my ears is not the same as it once was before I had this problem.

I think the solution to this problem will involve a process of returning the ear to its original state.

I had eczema in my ear canals as well as on the outside of the ears. What finally saved me was white vinegar diluted with distilled water. Just drop a few drops in daily. Let it sit in there for several seconds or more. Then let it drain out into a cotton ball. Carefully swab out any remaining liquid. It works like a charm.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By ross1961 on Friday, March 23, 2012 - 05:42 pm:

I started getting eczema in my ear canals about three years ago. It comes back about three times a year. It is itchy, flaky and can lead to painful swelling and some draining -- and infection. I have it now, it progressed into some ringing in my ears and a plugged feeling. By scratching at it with an unwashed finger, I likely introduced a staph infection.

The underlying cause of eczema is very likely related to diet -- both food allergies AND vitamin/mineral deficiencies. Deficiencies lead to immune system problems, histamine cycle problems, etc. We all need to be careful about both dietary (and other) allergies and deficiences.

My eczema flares up during allergy season. Allergens in the air can overwhelm your immune system, which might already be very stressed and weakened. Boosting your immune system is one possible cure.

DEFICIENCIES
The most common dietary deficiencies are magnesium and iodine. Research keywords: magnesium deficiency symptoms allergies eczema.
Research keywords: iodine deficiency symptoms allergies eczema.
1. Magnesium is needed for proper functioning of the body's histamine cycle (avoid magnesium oxide, it doesn't dissolve). Magnesium citrate (powder in capsule) dissolves fastest. Allergic reactions like eczema result from histamine going wild.
2. Iodine is needed for proper functioning of the thyroid gland which governs every cell in the body. Lab tests are not true indicators of low thyroid, but the symptoms are true indicators: low body temp upon waking, dry skin, not sweating easily, intolerance of extreme cold/heat, dull/thinning hair, low energy, slow healing, depression, brain fog, fatigue, weight gain, etc.

BOOST IMMUNE SYSTEM
1. Research: low thyroid (hypothyroidism), because dry skin, eczema, slow healing, etc. are symptoms of hypothyroidism. For me, I take 1x iodine (Iodoral), 1x selenium (yeast), and 3x "Raw Thyroid" capsules a day.
2. Research eating fresh garlic (or applying the juice). It is antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral (even kills MRSA staph). It also boosts your immune system.
3. Research using coconut oil (high quality, virgin). Eat a tablespoon per day. It's like garlic: antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral...
4. Research green tea (I prefer decaffeinated after 12 noon) and its immune system boosting -- recent research findings. Black tea and coffee have some boosting effect, but not as much as green tea.
5. Replenish the healthy bacteria in your gut, especially if you are taking antibiotics (which kill good and bad bacteria). I use WalMart's probiotic Acidophilus caplets.
6. Get plenty of vitamin C, it boosts the immune system and detoxifies the body. For an easy big boost, take a pack of Emergen-C powder with water. Better, if you have time, take fresh squeezed lemon juice mixed with local honey, it makes an immune system boosting, lemonade elixir. Local honey (made from local plants) is a homeopathic way to fight allergies. Also, honey is antibacterial, antifungal, etc. For lemons... researchers are now also finding anti-cancer benefits of lemons. Don't use too much or it can erode the enamel off your teeth. Drink it, and rinse with plain water.
7. As best you can, avoid most processed foods with preservatives, artificial colors/flavors; they're toxins. Make your own TV dinners.
8. Drink plenty of plain water to flush out toxins. Replenish electrolytes with sea salt. Regular salt is a byproduct of natural salt, after its been refined to remove valuable minerals. Even too much water can be unhealthy -- if you wash out too many salts.

AVOID HARMING YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM
Even the Greeks knew that "one man's food is another man's poison." Experiment on yourself in healthy ways. You own your body.
1. Avoid white sugar and white flour. Eat only raw sugar and whole wheat flour -- or else the digestive tract robs the missing parts (from refined sugar/wheat) from other parts of the body.
2. Try avoiding all dairy products for one month.
3. Try avoiding all wheat products for one month (including beer).
4. Try avoiding alcohol and tobaco for one month. They're toxins.
5. Try avoiding sweet things (including fruit drinks) and starchy things that feed a yeast infection. After a few days, your craving for sweets will decrease -- as the yeast infection (in your gut, ears, elsewhere) dies out.
6. Look for your allergic reactions. How do you feel the next day after eating or drinking that food? Tired? Bloated? Itchy? Anxious? Some people are even allergic to "healthy" things like orange juice and other orange colored foods. Some people get eczema outbreaks after eating fish.

Note:
I believe my ear eczema area became infected after I scratched at it, with unwashed hands (Hibiclens is a powerful anti-viral soap; WalMart has it; to kill staph). So, I'm trying to heal myself. One week of antibiotics isn't doing much so far. Last night, I layed my head against a (very) hot water bottle (covered with a towel to avoid overheating... don't cook your brain); it helped by increasing blood flow to the sore/swollen ear area and "melt away" gunk. Increased blood flow helps "wash away" the bad guys. Today, I just tried the hydrogen peroxide in my ears. It felt good, especially all the bubbling. I will next experiment with some coconut oil on the opening of my ear canal to help it heal -- with natural medicinal qualities of coconut. Last night, I experimented with fresh crushed garlic soaked in olive oil. I put a few drops of the garlicy oil in my ears -- to help kill any possible staph. I also ate four cloves of fresh garlic yesterday after reading about how powerful it is in killing even MRSA staph.

The best solution will be a permanent one. I am focusing on identifying my food allergy(ies) and keeping my immune system in best shape. For me, I believe the flare ups happen during allergy season, when my immune system gets overloaded. For me, foods that aggravate flare ups are dairy products (especially fresh milk) or wheat products (even beer).

As a follow up note.
My eczema flared up after two things: I cut back on my thyroid support supplements (to see what would happen) and allergy season started.
Also lack of consistent good sleep... staying up too late... stressed the immune system.

Good luck to us all!

I've had horrible itching in my ears for quite some time. I personally think it started because of a problem with my eustachian tubes. i always felt like something was in them, tickling them and making me cough sometimes because it would go all the way down them to my throat. So I would scratch with qtips. I basically got rid of all my ear wax doing that which left the very thin, sensitive skin of my ear canals exposed to air to dry out. With no ear wax to naturally move this flaky, dry skin out of the ear - the itching went from annoying to maddening!!! So i scratched some more. Then I ended up with a massive case of cellulitis in my ear canal (which is dangerous) and I went to an ENT finally. Dermatitis of the ear. Probably stuck with it for life because i got rid of all my ear wax and it can take six months or longer to rebuild the right amount of ear wax for your ears to function normally. People with this condition cannot go six months without scratching and getting the dead skin out of their ears, so we are doomed to scratch and clean and flush and never get ear wax back again in any substantial amounts. Dermotic oil does provide some relief. The condition always baby steps its way back though before I can rebuild more than a hint of ear wax. But I use it to kind of keep from going crazy with the itch time to time. I was going about once every two months to get all the built up dead skin out of my ears by an ENT and he actually had me get a water pik. It's a dental tool that shoots water out at varying speed to clean plaque off your teeth and under the gumline. He said to do that once or twice a week on a gentle, comfortable setting and thoroughly dry my ears afterwards and use dermotic oil.

OMG! nothing but the doctor's office's ear cleaning system scratches the itch like this thing! It can be a little messy, do it over a sink or use a small catch bowl, but it works. It satisfies the itch, gets a lot of the built up dead flakes out of your ear, which lowers the chances of infection, and saves you the money to see your ear doctor all the time. Pay money and get the good one with different heads of all types so you can use the system for your mouth too and make sure it is the one with 10 different pulse strength settings. I think I paid $70 or $80 for mine. totally worth the money. Just make sure you use a gentle enough setting, don't overdo it with frequency or power or you will actually abrade your skin and end up with weeping, sometimes bloody sores and maybe an infection. Gentle is the key. And make sure you thoroughly, thoroughly dry your ear canals and then apply dermotic oil or whatever oil concoction has worked for you.

Hope this helps.

I too have ezcema in my ears. I was going crazy with "itchy ear" for years before I finally went to ENT for the problem. He prescribed an ear oil called Dermotic Oil. It is by presciption only. I am surprised to find so many people and doctors do not seem to know about this medication. It is expensive but a bottle lasts longer than the expiration date. Most importantly, it works! I have also recently tried baby ezcema cream and it works but I am not sure it is good to put it in one's ears.

Well, fingers crossed, but so far there's a marked improvement with tea tree. So, I added 5 drops of pure tea tree oil to a teaspoon of olive oil and have been applying this twice a day with clean cotton buds, alternating with the Locorten. It takes away that maddening itch almost immediately, feels pleasantly tingly and it actually feels like things are clearing up. Also being very careful about trying not to get water in ears when showering and drying them off properly afterwards.

I've used earplugs on and off for the past few years as I'm a light sleeper and have been through a number of stressful events so being anxious etc hasn't helped as I wake up at the slightest noise if I don't wear them. That's kind of why I'm awake now at stupid o'clock!
Until about three months ago I never had any problems but then I started to have symptoms very similar to what many on here have described...frantic insistent itching, oozing and deep aching pain (probably from strenuously trying to relieve the itch!) I really feel for some of you who've had this for so long!
I went to the docs and was amazed to be told it was eczema and as I'd scratched so much I also had an infection. I was prescribed Locorten which seemed to do the trick and after a week or so things had improved and they pretty much went away.
I began using earplugs again a couple of weeks ago and although I stopped as soon as the symptoms began again, surprise surprise they've all come back...so I'm using the Locorten drops again, but I was wondering about also using a tea tree/olive oil mix to alleviate the itch and kill any nasties in there. I know it wont affect the medicinal properties of the Locorten and I'm already aware of the therapeutic properties of tea tree as I've used it to heal stuff in the past. It seems to work where loads else doesn't and I like the smell.
Fingers crossed.

I got the ones that are at the top of the market on a trial basis but was unable to use them because as soon as I put them in my ear I suffered from the horrendous itch. Hi everyone, I have been having this new problem for the last few months and am horrified to think I may have to put up with this for 20 yrs. I have tried many things, peroxide (3%), mercurochrome (2%), chickweed gel, anti bacterial cream, anti biotic cream, a 5 day course of anti biotics (dissappeared but came back)all of these things have helped for a few days but ultimately dont get rid of it. I do find however that paw paw cream helps keep it reasonably happy.I dont seem to have the excess skin that alot of you mention, but I do have the itch and the clear liquid at times. The Paw Paw keeps it moisturised and soothes the inflamed skin. I only have maybe 1 good scratch a day, if that. My plan is to take a 10 day course of anti biotics to see if that nips it in the bud, Im not entirely convinced it is eczema, as I have never had trouble with my skin, ever. And seeing how the anti biotics worked for the 5 days, that seems to indicate that it is a bacterial infection. I wish you all luck and hope this has helped a bit. We need to have forums like this as the doctors are absolutely clueless!!

I have atophic eczema, which has been going on for 2 1/2 years. The outside of my ears get really itchy, but not in the canal. However, my ears always feel blocked, like when on an airplane and can sometimes cause me pain (which I use St. Francis ear oil for).

I was wondering if ear candling might work to relieve some of the itchiness inside the ear. I'm going to try it to see if it helps relieve the blockage.

I want to add one more comment-Itching in your ears is the worst because you cannot get to it properly. Some times I want to rip my ears off@! FOr a long time, i stopped putting things in my ears to scratch and started rubbing the outer back portion of my ears. DO NOT DO THIS. I noticed that if you scratch from the outside by rubbing your ear canals, the canals swell up quickly which is highly irrating.

I have been a long time sufferer of eczema in my ears. First it was in just one ear and then both. My ENT originally prescribed me drops adn a steriod cream-the drops worked great but it came back. I keep the steriod cream around just in case. Lately, over this past winter (2010) I noticed my ears were completely cleared up, no itching, no pain and no waking up in the morning with fluid leaking from my ears! I was happy as a bee! Last week, my right ear began to mess with me. Now as of this week, its both ears. I understand everyone's pain on this site-it is horrible to wake up to fluid draining from your ears and crusting on the outside of the ear. It too wakes me up. Having this in my ears is horrible. I have used Qtips to scratch instead of my finger and now i find out that Qtips scratch the inside of your ear canal which will irrate it even more. I am going to try the olive oil, the vinegar solution, and the lotions mentioned here. My ENT informed me that this is something i may have to deal with for the rest of my life. It was soooooo nice to have no problems for a month. I didnt do anything different for it to flare up on me again. The only thing i can think of is : Seasons changing. If any of hte home remedies work, i will let you know. I feel for all of you with this in your ears or anywhere on your body. Its sad when Drs dont even know how to get rid of it. For those of you who do not have it in your ears but may have it somewhere else on your body:DO NOT SCRATCH ONE SPOT ADN THEN USE THE SAME HAND, FINGER OR DEVICE TO SCRATCH THE OTHER SPOT! i have realized that this will spread the condition to other areas of the body.

it seems to cycle faster when I am stressed. I find that foods and drinks dont really seem to play an affect on it. Although I think it is worth while to get checked for celiacs disease. I am getting checked this weekend.

Oh thank goodness I am not the only one. I'm almost 30 and for years have struggled with my ears from ear infections constantly as a child to being diagonsed at 18 with ear excema.

I try to avoid nuts as I've been told this is bad for excema and I'm really careful with washing my hair. I wear a hat when its cold and try not to blow dry my hair near my ears. My doctor told me that if I was to use a cotton bud in my ear to damp it first so that the cotton doesn't scratch my ears - this does help and it does get some of the gunk out as well.

I'm trying Boots own version of E45 cream in my ear at the moment - it does relieve the itching senstation but leaves my ear feeling full of gunk.

Does anyone else suffer with the sensation of the gunk travelling down their throat when they wake up in the morning?

It's such a relief to know that other people suffer from this. I've realised that mine is caused originally by stress (it's quite comforting to scratch an itchy ear!), it then developed into a habit - I think I've been scratching daily for at least 2 years, if not more. I've had 2 ear infections within the last 8 months (the first ear infections of my life) - the first time I was overseas and the second I'd been in London, and scratched as normal - thus spreading an infection i'd obviously picked up on my fingers/fingernails. I have to make sure my nails are kept really short and I clean my hands a lot to make sure if I do scratch I try to avoid infection. Both times I've had the infection (once in each ear) it's been so painful I've sworn to myself there's no way I'd ever scratch again after it was gone...but for some reason it doesn't stop me! I've spent every day telling myself - tomorrow will be the day I'll try really hard not to scratch, but then by about 8am I found I've done it already without even thinking about it! This weekend I've come up with a plan to try and break the cycle - have written down the day in hour slots, and give myself points for every hour I don't scratch. It may sound like a juvenile way of trying, and a bit pointless - but so far it seems to be working. I didn't scratch at all yesterday, and although it's so so so itchy today by 11.40am I have managed to resist. I dont want to cancel out all my hard work! Am going to try tea tree oil or maybe olive oil later to try and stop the constant discomfort of the itchiness....

If we are to scratch, we should wrap our finger in a peice of cloth or small peice of scot towel. Someone on this site wrote that when they stopped using cotton swabs, the ears got re infected hardly ever. So now when my ears itch, i only use cloth or a strong tissue, that way no bacteria can accidentally re infect the ear.

hi. what are the symptoms of excema in the ears? Excema is a genetic thing for me, so I get it all over my body. Usually as the winter starts to wear off, so does my excema and that's when it's at its worst for a while. This past winter, as my whole bodily layer of skin was being peeled away by my finger nails (itchy itchy!), I also noticed crazy itches in the ears. I thought it would go away, but it's been like 4 months, and it's still there! Now my ears are producing some sort of toughened skin that bleeds when it is peeled away. I almost lost it the other day while I was driving with one hand because the other was stuck in the side of my head itching! For those who are "experienced" with ear excema, what are the symptoms, please?

I mixed some alcohol, vinegar, and some drops of tea tree oil. I'll store it in an empty vitamin container. Before i start scratching, i'll dab a small piece of scot towel into the mixture, and hold it on my itchy area of the ear. When it dries, i apply some triamcinolone i got from the doctor. It not only got rid of the itch, it also cleared up an infection. All within a week. I like to explore alternative methods, and splash some conventional in. Also, from head to toe, the eczema has cleared after an intense lifetime of trial and air. I stay away from high histamine foods, msg foods, (check out msgtruth.com) and wheat. I currently use Aubrey products for my shamppoo and other skin care are different natural oils and calendula baby oil by Waleda. The ingredients are organic, and its not very expensive. I'm a young 50 yr old, learning about the role vitamins and supplements play in the eczema factor. I'm thankful to God and to many of you who helped. Its a battle worth fighting, just never give up.

Just apply with your finger tip into the inner ear. You can buy from most supermarkets or off the internet. Today ive also been prescribed Otomize Ear Spray from the doctor. He advised that warm olive oil in the ear wont work for eczema - only ear wax problems so dont bother with this method!

Wow I have had this problem too! I have been to the ENT about 5 or 6 times, I have lost count. She kept sucking out more each time, then putting me on drops. At first it was Acetol, which is a antifungal/ antibacterial hydrocortisone. Then something else but I think it made it worse because it dried my ear more. Last time I was there she managed to finally get ALL the gunk out. I am going for a follow up tomorrow and plan to ask her about the olive oil. It's definetly better than it was before but still a bitch itchy. Another thing I figured out is when I shampoo my hair I would always get shampoo in my ears so now I am rinsing them out really well.

Wow, to think there's other people like me and I'm not a freak. I get irritating eczema in my ears too. Unfortunately I am very naughty and scratch mine with a kirby grip which pulls out all the goo and reaches the itches (there's somethign grossly fascinating about examining what comes out of your ear). It's strange, mine flares up right at the time of the month, meaning itchy ears, stained pillows, oozy liquid/wax which smells like fish, and then as soon as that's gone it's jst itchy with dry skin. Will have to give the shea butter a try.

Anyone else get it where their ears are so full of smelly junk they can actualy smell it in their nose/throat? This is what drives me most mad!

Hi All... just got back from my 4th trip to my ENT Specialist... standard "put olive oil" in your ears speech again... plus drops, plus an ointment for the external ear canal.. this is going on 3 years.... I fly in 2 weeks, and am petrified my ears are going to explode on the plane... I have seen at least 8 doctors, GP's, ENT & a Dermatologists... all appointments are less than 5 minutes.. they could care less if your ears rot off... has anyone flown with an outbreak? Any advice? Thank you!!!!

reply::: JB -

I have flown with an outbreak, its pretty painful. I was on holiday in Menorca and got an outbreak and had no drops or anything with me. I was terrified i was goint to go completely deaf, it was just pretty painful on the descent but the rest of the flight didn't make it more painful than normal. Just make sure you have plenty of bolied sweats to stop your ears from popping and also i find the crunch of the sweet makes it feel like your ears are being scratched!!

Latest on the tea tree oil..

(touch wood). It seems to have worked. The approach now is to put about 5-10 drops in the bath. I've now stopped touching my ears or feeling a need to.

No more gunky stuff and twirled up bits of loo roll. At worst I've been getting bits of flaked skin in my ears which you can hear while moving. Those I pull out with tweezers (shock horror, not a problem as long as you don't go too deep and are careful).

For all of the arm waving that the medical profession comes out with at cotton wood buds and putting anything in your ears; What else are we supposed to do? Medicines don't work, Doctor's don't know (and don't care), and no one seems interested.

But anyway, tea tree oil seems to be working in the bath. I say that lightly as I know full well that it could all be back again next month.

:-)

Hi I've used everything over the last two years from olive oil/H.cortisone ointment and anibiotics/antifungal creams for infected excema in the ears. Doctors say my ears have no wax in them which doesn't help, so therefore they are very dry and I have paper thin eardrums. This means they are v.itchy at best and painful most of the time. I have recently been advised to use Diprobase moisturizer daily (applied caefully with cotton buds)which helps but if I miss a day its back to the itch so I wonder if it will ever go?

Can anyone help me? I have a four year-old daughter that has been diagnosed with eczema of the ear canal. In addition she has narrow ear canals and does not produce much wax. She was diagnoticed about 18 months ago when we took her to an ENT because we noticed hearing loss and her speach was delayed. The doctor has put her on olive oil and steriods (both of these are topically applied) but we are not seeing any long-term improvement. She gets better after the canals are cleaned, but I have to take her in about every three months to have all the dead skin sucked out. I am very fustrated because I don't know what to do next and I have horrible insurance. Because she is so young, I am afaid to try some of the suggestions on this site and our ENT has told us not to put anything in her ear. Does anyone have any advice for us? Thank you in advance.

Tea tree oil. Don't put it in neat though, it stings like hell (already did that). I'm on my third day and my ears are totally dry, don't itch, yet are really flaked up. It's almost as if they're healing.

I've only recently discovered tea tree oil (33 years old), and this stuff is amazing. It works for absolutely everything, especially spots. Our NHS here doesn't support aromatheraphy.. Saying that though, our hospitals are filthy and people come out worse than they were when they went in. So I'm not too bothered about their views on anything anyway.

I'm sitting here right now in bed with my ears pulsating to heart beat, having just put some in on a cotton wool bud. I live in hope, this has been going on for about 4-years and is driving me round the bend.

Then I went to a different doctor and he recommended a lotion called Ectoson regular 0.1%. BINGO!!!! the eczema in and around my ears and nose is gone. I apply a bit of it to the affected area 1-2 times a day and around 4-6 days my rash was just about gone. I've only been on this stuff for 3 weeks now. I am starting to use less and less to see if the rash comes back. I hope this info helps you people out.

I had a problem with my ears and it started from using Q-tips. My ears itched soo bad, oozed and crusted and it always turns into a slight infection bc we take out and disrupt our bodies natural way of cleaning out our ears-wax.(it would act up during early fall weather) I had a problem w/my ears for years. This last time I used antibiotic ear drops w/steriods, let it sit but then took soft toilet paper and gently dabbed the extra out of my ear. Then I let my ears develop wax again-about a month. DONT TOUCH YOUR EARS UNLESS YOUR GETTING THE EXTRA MOISTURE OUT. Now I have wax again and I only dab the extra moisture out of my ear with clean toilet paper over my finger and dab gently- sometimes with a little hydrogen peroxide-if itchy. Good luck. hope this helps someone.
Has anyone tried Free derm HC to cure their eczema?
Their website is awesome.
You know, God can cure anything and give us wisdom with prayer.

I had eczema of the ear for 2 years. It was very itchy. I cured this by putting Otex in my ears overnight, then flushing it out with warm water. This cleaned out the ears (or you could get the doctor to clean them out). Then (just the once) I coated the itchy insides of the ear canal with a small amount of Daktarin, a steroid cream used for athletes foot. Don't then touch your ears at all, anywhere, with anything, even your finger. Keep the ears completely and absolutely dry. Wash you hair in a basin so no water gets near the ear. If having a shower, keep the shower head below the shoulder. Don't even think about swimming or bathing. This has worked for me

My doctor prescribes Acetosol brand drops, prescription only. It's no big deal, just a combination of cortisone and vinegar. It controls it well. I use it twice per day until it's under control, maybe for a week. Then once every day or two for prevention.

My ears get kind of itchy inside. The main problem is they get kind of plugged up because the ear canals are oozy and flaky. Then I can't hear so well.

The problem with the Acetosol is that it comes in tiny bottles, which are soon empty. That's ridiculous. This seems to be a chronic condition, so you'd use lots of it in a year.

Here's how I solved the problem. If my ears are itchy and inflamed, I put generic non-prescription cortisone cream in the ear canals with a Q-tip. Twice a day for a few days, until they aren't inflamed. Then I make a solution of half vinegar and half water and drip it in my ears twice a day for a few days, then once a day for prevention. I keep it in empty Acetosol bottles! Hah!

Hi Just noticing all this suffering with eczema. I had it for three years following a hugely stressful relationship break-up.. I'm a health practitioner & having the skin disorder was completely foreign to me; so wat do u do? Ignore it as it'll go away right? WRONG. In the second year I read a book & attended a personal seminar and decided that. yes 'the differnce b/t someone whose well & someone with dis-ease, is that the un-well individual has forgotten the memory of being whole'-Bruce Way. My journey begun & the eczema made signicant improvements within 3 months & 8mths later it was completely gone. That was two years ago. Aloe Vera was my topical saviour (fresh is best or high content). Internally, carrot apple celery (lemon/ginger) juices; and Vitamin B-complex for chronic stress. Also Vit-C important for shin repair yet the juices will also provide. And for immediate topical relief Marigold or Nettle Cream were priceless. Of course, learn to face your fears & deal with the initial & continued stressors. LOL

I've had eczema in my ears for years now. I orginially went to a good ENT and he diagnosed me. He said that water aggravates the eczema and in defense your ear creates more wax, that's why we have to get our ears cleaned so much. He also like invented this crazy vacumn for sucking the wax out so I didn't have to have my ears flushed with water which is bad for it. I suggest going to an ENT because my normal dr had no idea and suggested everything from blowdrier to the ear after cleaning (so bad for your hearing) to rubbing alcohol to evaporate the water which is EXCRUCIATINGLY painful because my ear canals are raw duh! I should probably get some corticosteroids. My ENT did want me to get allergy testing though (my parents nixed it cuz it was expensive) to see what could be causing it. I think I'll do that once I'm not a poor grad student because it's really a horrible horrible thing to deal with. I just don't know what's safe to put in my ears and I don't want to put a Qtip in too far. I've been really good lately at avoiding the ear infections. Even though I wish none of us had this it's nice to know I'm not alone!

Since September 2004, I've had problems with my ears -- there's a sticky waxy substance that dries to a crust and then flakes off, plus the ear canal itches like crazy. I did a lot of swimming prior to this and had an ear infection in one ear. It was after this ear infection that the waxy, crusty substance and itching started. I do notice that it seems to worsen when I'm under stress. (Also, I don't use Q-tips in my ears as I was told they are not good to use for this type of condition.)

Anti-itch creams seem to work for a little while when I use them. I never tried the olive oil but intend to tonight.

I did some research on the internet regarding psoriasis -- (not sure of spelling). My dad had this on his legs and elbows and I figured maybe I had inherited it as my symptoms sounded similar.

I have had eczema in my ears for about 23 years on and off. I went to see a Chinese doctor for accupuncture about something else and mentioned my problem of very itchy, weeping, sore ears. His advice to me was that iy was caused by eating fish and to refrain from eating it for 3 months. At that time i was eating tuna most days, i stopped eating fish for 3 months and found that the eczema improved dramatically! i do occasionally eat fish/seafood and do notice that my ears start to itch afterwards, but i now know the reason why!

I have had good results with soothing the itchyness and stopping the goopy gunk / dryed gunk cycle with a product called LANSINOH. LANSINOH is a medical grade lanolin, all natural and verrryyy sooothing. It is actually marketed for breastfeeding mothers to repair cracking sensitive skin. Not messy to use either. I put some on a Q-tip and coat my ear canal, no dripping. Maybe this will help some one out there. P.S. if anyone has a percussive back massager or "personal massager" this vibrating next to your ear can help when it is very itchy.... (it shows you how inventive DESPERATE people can be!!) Hi Frustrated Laady,
Yes, virgin shea butter is fantastic to use all over the body. It is especially good when the skin is dry & cracked. I'd definitley give it a try if the hydrocortisones aren't working. All I do with the raw shea butter is melt a bit with olive oil on a teaspoon & hold it over the steam of a boiled kettle. (watch your fingers!)It melts really fast & the shea/olive oil can then be dropped into the ear. (1 or 2 drops per ear. Put a piece of cotton wool in to stop it coming out & then leave it for as long as possible.)
Hope this helps, Anita

I tried the shea & olive oil for my ears. They have worked a treat! Bit greasy for the hair round the ears but I think thats a small price to pay to have relief from itching ears. I cheated & bought a shea & olive oil cream from akamuti the company you told me about.
Thanks again for the pointers.

Hi Anita - have you tried warmed olive oil (yes the plain old cooking type) in the ear???. just warm it up and use a dropper to apply - just a few drops. because it is also in liquid form it will penetrate more easily and deeper into the ear canal and also because of its warmth will help to clear waxy deposits in the ear. it will leave a coating of oil to help sooth the dry, irritated skin. this is commonly used to help clear and soothe ear canals. costs next to nothing. i also use olive oil mixed in with plain moisturising cream to apply to the skin - makes a great heavy based moisturiser - soaks in easily, doesn't irritate and helps waterproof the skin. hope this helps

Hi Anita,

Shea butter is very soothing on eczema generally & having had extremely itchy, infected ears in the past, I can say that it really does calm the itching & because it melts at body temperature it goes in easily with an ear bud. My young daughter also has had some benifit too & it improves with a couple of drops of lavender essential oil which helps to fight infection & is also warming to the ear. I get my shea from a company called Akamuti because they have the pure stuff & it has no chemicals in it. Hope this is helpful to you.

Has anyone ever tried shea butter as a cure for eczema in the ear? I have heard that it gives really good results. I'd like to hear from anyone who has been successful before I try it myself.
Thanks.

Has anyone picked up a fungi infection in the ear due from eczema. Driving me mad. This has been going on for a couple of months now. Have to keep going back to have my ear sucked out as gunk keeps building up from infection, apparently old skin shedding from the infection, which consultant says is due to eczema. Just seems to be a case of being patience and keep having it cleaned out. Never suffered in my life from eczema, but for some reason just flaired up in my ears a couple of years ago. Keep thinking I am allergic to something I put on my ears, stopped wearing earrings, stopped using hairspray, obviously just one of those things out of my control. Driving me nuts though!

I have had eczema in my left ear canal for about 3 years now. I have have luck with steroid drops, but as soon as I stop using them it comes right back. I have seen my Gp several times, and have been sent to a ENt specialist also. They seem to think that these drops are doing the trick, but I am so tired of it. They are so messy and oily, my ear is always leaky when I put the drops in, I have to lay down for an hour or more just to keep a little bit of it in and they expect me to put them in 4 times a day.. Has anyone had any better treatment that isn't so inconvenient?

People, it seems that I have just become the newest member of an illite society. My problem of eczema in the ear does not sound as bad as some of yours but never the less, I have just started my second course of Locorton Viaform after two courses of Sofradex or something similar. The GP says that once you have it, it will never go away. It would seem that he is right, but I thought that I would have some breathing space between bouts. Terrible itching in the ear canal accompanied by infected wax that looks whitish.

I have had a lot of trouble with irritation on the ears. My pillocases uses to be constantly blood marked. I even scratched them in bed not even knowing I was doing it. Now in Nov 2003 at last I have solved the problem. I have other problems but at least I have solved this one. Stress is of course part of the problem in all irritations of eczema. I am thinking of taking up the Chinese Tie Chi.

See my post right before this one-I just had a drs appt where they drew blood. Two days later i have a breakout of this stuff on my elbow. It has to be a blood/skin barrier issue.

5yrs ago, getting haircut, I was nicked and it drew blood. Within the month I had this clear weepy fluid alternated with yellow mushy crusty flaky stuff started at top of ear and it spread to behind entire ear. I managed to scratch and spread it to behind the other ear (kept fingering to compare!) and eventually inside the ears. Three years later I had spread it to the middle knuckles of the three fingers I would swipe down behind the ear to mop the drainage! Medical center dermatologists have tried everything because they don't seem to be able to diagnose! Finally I am now using "Triamcinolone Acetonide" and it works remarkably well behind my ears. Too bad they couldn't have tried this before it worsened and I spread it elsewhere!!!!! For 5yrs I messed with antifungals, tars, weak cortisone creams, etc!!! I say, hit it with the sledgehammer first and then see where you stand!!!!! I still don't have a for sure diagnosis....

I remember when I was doing my 'a' levels in 1993 and everything sounded like I was in a swimming pool. I eventually got sent to an ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialist and he kept sticking a suction pipe in my ear to get the gunk out and giving me ear drops and told me to 'come back in two weeks'. He finally sussed out that I had eczema in my ear canal and coated a thin strip of gauze about 15cm long with some steroid eczema cream and pushed it right down my ear and I had to leave it there for 3 days. I am not suggesting that you do that yourself, but maybe suggest this to your GP and he could insert it for you.

Hi all,
the inside of my ears get REALLY, REALLY itchy. Its absolutely driving me mad. Its so frustrating because I can't reach inside my ears to satisfy the itch. Is it possible to get eczema so far inside the ear? (I think its the ear canal, but I'm not sure!)
Also, I know it sounds sick but I must ask, whats the best way to clean the inside of your ears to remove the wax? It may not be the eczema thats causing the itchying, it may be the wax.
Where I come from, theres an old wives tale which believes in a warm olive oil cure for itchy ears. Can anybody refute or confirm this myth?

Any suggestions would be wonderful!!
Thanks in advance!

Eczema. All over the ears. Both. Weeping and seeping. Clear watery fluid. Yellow thick fluid. Dries up in the day. So so hard, I refrain from touching my ears. Then I sleep...

I wake with wet ears. Soaked with the fluid. It's from scratching when I sleep. Or rolling on to my ears and my ears rub against the pillow or sheets. Thus flaking off the dried fluid, and letting it seep. And the whole process starts again.

Frustration. Anger. Helplessness.

I recently had a pretty bad eczema break-out in my upper body and my ears were really swollen. It felt like they were ready to burst with liquid. But now they're getting better but they seem to get weepy really easily. Let me just say I've never peeled off larger pieces of dead skin from eczema than from my outer ear! Sometimes I think I'm going to run out of skin layers before I die. Good luck everyone!

I have suffered from eczema in my ears (and hands, forearms/elbows, lower legs) for about 3 years and it has always been a gradual build-up of itching from small areas in the outer ear folds and outer canal, through discomfort and swelling, through broken skin and weeping clear yellow fluid, followed by large encrusted scabs as the fluid dries. The whole cycle lasts about 2-3 weeks and then dies down quickly for a quiescent period of about 4 weeks before it starts all over again.
In the last week my ears have gone mad and I now have a continuous stream of fluid which I have to mop up before it drips on my neck and shoulder. My pillow is a mass of stains in the morning.
My GP is very helpful telling me not to put things in my ear canal!!
I have previously tried Sofradex, Dermovate, Betnovate, Eumovate, Locoid C, etc. and at times I have had relief. However there appears to be no pattern to the relief, i.e. when, which medication, how often applied etc.
Is my latest set of symptoms unusual or is it the normal course of events? Will it get worse? Could it? I'm not expecting a cure or professional advice, but I'm hoping others may have some tips/advice.

Dave C, you mention that you are having success with Tacrolimus Ointment. Did you find that topical steroids didn't work? Tacrolimus is a topical immunomodulator based on one of the drugs that is given to transplant patients to stop rejection by suppressing the immune system. Time will tell what its longterm effects are when used as an ointment. If I found that a mild or moderate steroid cream worked, I'd be inclined to stick with that rather than Tacrolimus. If however steroids prove ineffective, Tacrolimus is a good new option. There will still be a need to watch out for infection however, especially since Tacrolimus will tend to reduce the skin's immune response.
Best wishes,
David.

Hey Madam Flaky - I had something similar to this!! A doctor said it was infected eczema and cos I had scratched it, it had picked up all sorts of bugs off my fingers and become infected. I had an antibiotic earspray then followed up with plenty of lacto baccillus to stop fungal infections etc. The worse thing you can do for this (if it is the same complaint I had) is to stuff your ears up with tissue paper. Let em breathe!! I had to and one of my ears at its most infected smelled of WET DOG!!!! Good Luck!

My ear story is a mucky one. I lost so much sleep because my ears would get extremely hot and fill up with this weird goop inside. It was so uncomfortable. The only solution I have come up with is to scrunch up tissues in my ear to soak up the goop and since I started to do that, I don't dread sleep quite so much. It's yucky, but it's true.

I'm a 21 year old psychology student who has sufferd with severe eczema all of my life. Luckily due to the amount of times I've been in and out of hospital I am quite able to manage my skin well. My ears, face and scalp are the worst ares to control. The advice i give is to make sure that moituriser or cream of some sort is put on the ears as often as possible this keeps the skin supple so when you do scratch less harm is done. Also change your bedding as often as you can making sure that you hoover your pillows whilst doing so. Often ice packs wrapped in a cotton pillow case or something similar placed on the ears relieves the itching. Hope that any of this helps you at all.

Can anyone help me. I have had eczema of the outer ear for over five years and I am now at breaking point. I also continually get inner ear infections.
If anyone has advice on how to manage the condition I would be most grateful.

I have found that a new non-steroid ointment a hospital consultant prescribed for me is very effective on eczema around the ear. It is called Tacrolimus and it is very effective. I have found that it also works on the face and any other parts of the body. I recommend it.

Hi Harpercat,
I also suffer from eczema around my ear. I've tracked it down to the telephone, I don't know if its because I'm allergic to the plastic or because my ear gets hot.
I've modified my phone to use headphones which go around my ear and have foam, rather than plastic.
It seems to be working, not sure if ths will hep you though.

Sam

Does anyone else suffer from eczema in the folds of the ear? It's driving me MAD and, although I get eczema in other places too (including the face, which is probably the worst) none of the usual methods of managing eczema seem to be helping. I've had eczema in the actual ear canal in the past but not for a couple of years now.I know I shouldn't scratch but I'm afraid I do - until it bleeds, very often. Any advice/tips would be welcome. Thanks!!
